The blue flag beaches are the main attraction of the Sterpaia Park, fringed by dunes and the flourishing Mediterranean scrub, they overlook the Gulf of Follonica and lie 9 km away.
At 15 kms from the opposite side of the promontory of Piombino, the Gulf of Baratti and the beaches of Rimigliano.
La Cuccumella Holiday Home lies in the geothermic area of the Metallifere Hills, an area rich in thermal springs. The village of Venturina (7 kms from La Cuccumella) has recently obtained the title of Venturina Terme; here you will find both the lake of Calidario with a constant water temperature of 36°, where you can spend the whole day or the evening and the "Thermarium", the new itinerary with saunas, Turkish baths, cold scented showers, cromatherapy and Jacuzzis. It is open every day throughout the year.
In the surroundings you can find the "Terme del Sole" and at 20 kms the new thermal springs of "Sassetta". An important Thalassotherapy centre is 30 kms away. Saturnia is at 90 kms, Petriolo at 80 kms.
The nearby medieval towns also deserve a particular mention, proud holders of the orange flag award of the Italian Touring Club:
Suvereto: a splendid example of medieval architecture, still today surrounded by its walls;
Campiglia Marittima: rising on a hill surrounded by its medieval walls, from the terrace you can enjoy the wonderful panorama including the entire gulf of Follonica from Punta Ala to Piombino as far as the Gulf of Baratti;
Massa Marittima: famous for its Cathedral in gothic-roman style which lies sideways with respect to the Piazza, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Italy. The "Palio del Girifalco" (a crossbow tournament in traditional costume) is not to be missed.
La Cuccumella Holiday Home lies exactly opposite the Island of Elba, which can be reached by a one hour crossing from the port of Piombino (18 km away). As well as the Historic Centre and the Archaeological Museum of Populonia, you must not miss Piazza Bovio: a wonderful terrace overlooking the sea where you can enjoy wonderful views over the entire Gulf and, on a clear day, admire the islands of the archipelago as far as Corsica.
Rising towards the mounts of the "Campigliese", you can reach The San Silvestro Archaeo-mineral Park, which lies under Campiglia, where you will find a fascinating underground itinerary inside a mining tunnel and a perfectly preserved miners' village. There is an information centre from where trips and excursions are organised, also by means of a small train.
Between the Promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti you can find the walled city of Populonia which has a tower, from where you can enjoy a magnificent panorama. Here you can visit the remains of the old Populonias, the only Etruscan city which directly overlooks the sea, with a commercial port which thrived on the processing of iron from Elba. The area is abundant with Etruscan and Roman remains discovered in the surroundings and under the sea. The statue of “Apollo da Piombino” which was found in the Gulf of Baratti is today exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. In the Archaeological Park of Baratti guided visits are organised in an area full of archaeological remains and site of the Necropolis with tombs of various types.
Eight kms away you can find the WWF Natural Reserve of "Paludi Orti Bottagone" where it is possible to see a variety of bird species including flamingos, herons and egrets.
In the radius of 50 km to the South of the La Cuccumella Holiday Home we can find the Toscana Golf Club, an 18-hole golf course. The Uccellina Park offers the possibility of various itineraries, more or less challenging, and guided excursions by canoe on the river Ombrone as far as the estuary.
Finally, during the summer boats depart from San Vincenzo and Castiglione for all the Islands of the Tuscan archipelago.
